About This Photo
A view of the Riverside Brewing Company in 1928, located on Riverside Drive East
Built in 1923 by Albert H. McPhail, the building was used as a Brewery to export product to the United States during the prohibition. Currently, used as a depot for aggregate and shipping materials.
With the onset of prohibition, Stroh Brewery Company's brew master, Otto Rosenbusch invest with F.J. Kirsch to create the Riverside Brewing Company. The Brewery had to compete with other breweries along the waterfront to supply the Americans with their supply of beer! Evidently, when the American prohibition of alcohol ended in 1933, the surge in demand dwindled, and in 1935 the Riverside Brewing Company was sold to crosstown rivals, the British American Brewing Company for $27,000.
On the same property, sharing the jetty was Monarch Liqueur Company. Built in 1929 by Albert James Thothian. (Courtesy of UWindsor)
Brewing Corporation of Ontario purchased all securities and collateral of the Riverside Brewing Corporation (located on the east side of Windsor, and a competitor of British American) held by a local bank and immediately sold all its assets and closed the plant. The majority of Riverside’s business was picked up by the British American Brewery.
The sign is still visible today
